  • What are the counseling sessions like?
This depends on your goal for counseling which you will tell me, in your intake form, prior to our initial consultation. In our initial consultation, we discuss your goal for the upcoming session(s) and create a plan. If you are interested in discussing one particular problem in an individual session, what we do is a thorough analysis of the problem and the external constraints that it imposes. Then, we move on to the internal constraints for a possible solutions. These are your values. Finally, we will discuss which possible solutions are aligned with your values. You might want do more in-depth work on examining your life, your worldview, your purpose, and your vocation. In that case, we design the sessions based on your particular needs.
  • How is philosophical counseling different from psychotherapy?
Philosophical counseling is an educational service and not a mental health service. Although the aim of philosophical counseling, similar to therapy, is well-being and mental and emotional flourishing, the approach is not based on diagnosis. Philosophical counseling does not pathologize problems and is based on the view that the human life is complicated and full of dilemmas. For instance, existential angst or depression, from the point of view of philosophical practice, are not necessarily a sign of a mental health problems, but are considered as normal human reactions to the human condition. A psychotherapist primarily focuses on your feeling patterns and seeks to uncover trauma and childhood origins of current problems. A philosophical counselor helps you examine your worldview, your narratives and thought patterns, and your values.

You can cancel up to 24 hours prior to the session for a full refund.
  • What is philosophical counseling?
Philosophical counseling is the use of philosophical insights and methods in approaching life's big questions and human problems. In my particular practice, I help you examine your relationship with your values to see whether they are truly yours or adopted through societal pressures. We also examine your life to see how aligned it is with your values. The aim is to help you find what you care about most. So you can live with passion, purpose, and meaning.
  • How often and for how long do we see each other?
This depends on the nature of the issues that you would like to discuss. If you want to discuss a particular decision or a moral dilemma one or two sessions might be enough. If you want an in depth examination of your life, your worldview, your values a much longer time-commitment is needed. I recommend committing to, at least, three months of counseling in that case. We meet weekly or bi-weekly depending on your schedule and how much time you need between the sessions to continue your reflections.
  • Where do we meet?
All our sessions take place online and through zoom.
  • How much does a counseling session cost?
Our first 30-min consultation is free. In this session, we decide if we are a good fit. All subsequent sessions are one hour and cost $100. You can buy a 5-session package for $400. This is a 20% discount of $100. I offer a few sliding scale spots. There might be a waiting list for those.
  • Can I do psychotherapy and philosophical counseling, at the same time?
Yes. Philosophical counseling and psychotherapy can work well as complimentary services since one primarily focuses on emotional state and the other on thoughts and beliefs. There are also areas of overlap between the two since our thoughts and feelings are intimately interconnected.
  • Do you accept insurance?
Philosophical counseling is an educational service and not a medical one, so it is not covered by insurance. I believe that philosophy can heal lives, but unfortunately, this is not acknowledged by our current social institutions!
  • Do I have to study philosophy to do philosophical counseling?
Nope! This is not a philosophy class and I am not a teacher (not here at least!). Our aim is to have a philosophical conversation that is of value to your life. I might find that a particular philosopher's view is beneficial to you and if you are interested you can read that philosopher's work and we can discuss it. However, this is a totally optional path. Our aim is to bring the practical value of philosophy to your life and that can take many different forms.
